On March 25-27, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA), the Australian Office Taipei, and the British Office Taipei jointly hosted the “2024 GCTF International Workshop on Combating Transnational Fraud.”

In recent years, the types and techniques of criminal fraud have continued to evolve with the rise of e-commerce, remote work, and various technologies that can facilitate illicit activities.  Modern fraud is complex and wide-ranging, often occurs across borders, and the number of cases and financial losses have hit new highs.  Combating fraud requires expertise and robust cooperation across frontiers.

Held in Taipei, this three-day GCTF workshop allowed participants to exchange views on fraud detection and prevention in various industries, fraud-fighting technologies, and the challenges and solutions in combating transnational fraud.  Experts, scholars, civil society specialists, and private sector representatives from Taiwan, Japan, Australia, the UK, and the United States – including officials from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Federal Communications Commission – shared their experiences and best practices. This workshop featured 270 participants, including nearly 40 visiting participants from 24 countries.

AIT, Taiwan MOFA, JTEA, and the Australian Office Taipei jointly administer the GCTF program, which is a capacity building platform for Taiwan to share its expertise in tackling issues of global concern.
