Thank you, Mr. Secretary-General, Mr. President, Foreign Minister Merzoug, High-Representative Moratinos, and Secretary-General Taha, for convening us today.

We gather during the holy month of Ramadan, a period of reflection and renewal for Muslims all over the world. Over the next few weeks, families and communities will gather to read the Quran, to break their fast, to rededicate themselves to one another and to God.

This is a moment of sacred celebration. But for far too many Muslim people, this is also a moment of pain and fear.

In the past year alone, tens of thousands of Muslims have been killed in devastating conflicts, including wars in Sudan and Gaza.

Millions of Uyghur and Rohingya Muslims have been targeted in China and Burma respectively, with some subjected to abuses deemed crimes against humanity.

Religious minorities have faced oppression in Afghanistan and Iran.
